Understanding the Benefits of Dental Crowns
Dental crowns structure and support damaged, decayed, fractured, and weak teeth. These tooth-shaped “caps” can salvage what’s left of your affected teeth while permanently maintaining your smile.
About Dental Crowns

Many patients have questions about dental crowns, such as what they are used for and what the procedure entails. These restorative little “caps” have many functional purposes and are also an excellent aesthetic choice for decayed teeth.

At Lakewood Dental, we believe in patient education, which is why we’re here to explain everything you need to know about dental crowns. You will feel empowered in our dentist chair if you know all of the facts before your procedure.

Functions
Dental crowns serve many purposes in patients with damaged teeth. They are used to support the tooth’s structure so that it does not have to be removed entirely. Many patients also opt for dental crowns to improve the appearance of decayed or fractured teeth.
Some other functions of dental crowns include:
  • Reinforce fillings
  • Strengthen weak teeth
  • Cover up discoloration and decay
  • Cap a dental implant
  • Fix fractured teeth
  • Avoid tooth removal
Dental crowns are an excellent option for reinforcing the structure of your tooth. If you want better-looking, stronger teeth, dental crowns might be the best option for you.
Material
Dental crowns can be made of different materials. Each type of dental crown has pros and cons. It is up to you and your dentist to determine which sort of crown works best for you.
Some other functions of dental crowns include:
  • Ceramic
  • Porcelain with metal
  • Zirconia (veneers material)
  • Metal alloy
  • Acrylic
These are the most common types of dental crowns. The suitable material for you will depend on your unique needs. When you come to Lakewood Dental, we will help you find the ideal dental crown for your smile.
Cost

When searching for the best type of dental crown for you, the cost is an influential factor. The cost of these caps depends on the type and number of crowns you need. The average price of dental crowns ranges from $1,100 to $3,500 per tooth.

When you visit us at Lakewood Dental, we will give you an estimate of your dental crown cost by first assessing your teeth to determine what type of crowns you need. Prices will vary for each patient.

Benefits
Dental crowns provide a variety of benefits to your teeth. Beyond just preventing tooth fractures or root canals, crowns provide aesthetic advantages, as well.
Some of the benefits of getting dental crowns include:
  • Keeping your teeth in place
  • Enhancing the appearance of damaged teeth
  • Preventing further tooth damage
  • Keeping your teeth strong
  • Avoiding tooth extraction
  • Supporting dental implants and bridges
If you suffer from tooth damage, dental crowns are a good option for restoration. The benefits of dental crowns are numerous, and many patients have gained confidence in their smiles because of dental crowns.
Dental Crown Procedure
The process of installing and maintaining dental crowns is fairly simple. At Lakewood Dental, we install dental crowns with care. We want you to feel comfortable with the process. Once your caps are in place, and you leave our office, your dental hygiene routine will determine how long your crowns stay in good shape.
First Visit

The dental crown procedure requires two visits. The first visit is when we assess your teeth. We determine if you need any additional procedures before we install dental crowns. This assessment also ensures your teeth are healthy and not susceptible to infection before placing dental crowns.

We will have to alter the shape of your tooth so that the crown can fit comfortably. The reshaping process can involve removing part of your natural tooth. We only file down as much as is needed to place the crown.

After we treat any dental health issues and reshape your tooth, we will make a mold of your tooth. The dental crown will be custom-made based on this mold. In some cases, we will provide you with a temporary crown to protect your tooth before installing the permanent crown.

Second Visit

At your second visit to our office, we will install the dental crown. There is typically a three- to four-week waiting period while the dental crown is made. Once your crown is ready, you can come in for your second appointment.

If there is any discomfort or problems with your bite, we address them immediately. We will first numb the area around your tooth. Then, we use a special kind of dental glue to attach the crown to your tooth, where it will stay permanently. We can reshape the crown to help it fit comfortably on your tooth.
